Columbus Area Boardgaming Society (CABS) Shows ColumbusFaceGames a Good Time
May 8, 2010
ColumbusFaceGames attended the May 7 meeting of the Columbus Area Boardgaming Society (CABS) and was very impressed. Imagine, if you will, a Boardgame Geek or someone with even the smallest interest in playing boardgames walking into a room with 120 folks of all ages, shapes and sizes gathered around 25 or more different boardgames.
Twenty-five different board games being played at the same time! Everyone is laughing and smiling and having an unbelievable time. You are quickly welcomed to the group and shown around the facilities, which are clean, comfortable and well-lighted. You quickly get introduced to a variety of people who want to know what kind of games you enjoy and how long you have been playing boardgames.
You watch a game for a time, in ColumbusFaceGames’ visit, it was Tikal. Tikal is a game CFG has played in the past and it is a fine game by Rio Grand Games. The object is to explore the Central American jungle, excavate hidden temples and collect treasures. If you are ‘Jonesing’ to be Indiana Jones this is a game you would like.
While the game was being played, I spoke to one of the players, who also happened to be the Vice President of CABS, Scott Palenshus and public relations guru Bud Sauer also passed by occasionally, as he assisted with a dozen different items. Between them and the other three players in the game Mike, Jenny, and Glen I had many of my most burning questions answered about this organization.
CFG: How many total folks are members of CABS?
CABS CABS has more than 300 total paid members.
CFG It is typical to have this many of your members turn up at your weekly meeting?
CABS Yes, our average weekly attendance for 2010 is 115 and that includes two meetings that were heavily effected by blizzards, this year. Without those two CABS attendance is about 130.
CFG I am looking around at an unbelievable collection of games that everyone is playing. How many games are in your library?
CABS We are proud of the fact that we have over 1000 unique boardgame titles with about 1200 actual games in our library.
CFG Your members can use these games at the weekly meetings?
CABS Yes, all the games are available to be played at our weekly meetings and one of the benefits of membership in CABS is that our members can borrow from our game library.
CFG Speaking of the benefits of membership in CABS, what are some of the other benefits your members enjoy?
CABS Some of the benefits our members enjoy are:
Free admission to Columbus Buckeye Game Fest, Columbus’ premier boardgame convention
Members may check out one game at a time from our library for a two week period (this is a great way to figure out if you like a game, before you buy it)
Weekly meetings with 100+ fellow boardgamers to share your face-to-face gaming experience or as CABS likes to say “Good Friends – Good Games – Good Fun!”
Members receive occasional free games at special events
20% Discount at Ravenstone Games
10% Discount at The Soldiery
Club Price Discount to Origins admission
Occasional FREE games at special events (in the last two years CABS has given away nearly $70,000 in free games to its members)
Silent auction of games (members auction off their games to other members)
After Turkey Day Game Fest (2010 may be 24 hours of solid boardgaming!)
CABS has been operating as an organization since 1997, that is 13 years of boardgaming goodness! A link to their website is in the links section and a list of upcoming events can be found under the Coming Boardgame Events page. CFG had a great time Friday and hopes if you like boardgaming that you will take this opportunity to check out this great organization.
