Columbus Face Games heard about a big deep-stack Texas Hold ‘em tournament that occurred Saturday May 1 at the Platinum Players Club at 3131 Broadway in Grove City, Ohio.
Columbus Face Games interviewed the tournament organizer, Brian Graves, to get the 411 on this exciting tournament.
CFG: Brian, you have been organizing large (30+ player) deep-stack home tournaments for some time. What do you like most about playing face-to-face deep stack tournaments?
BG: I like the interaction of live play and the ability to read your opponents tells. I like the look on the other players face when you fire three shells, they fold a big hand and you show a big bluff.
CFG: Why have you decided to move your deep-stack home tournament to the Platinum Players Club in Grove City, OH?
BG: The Platinum Players Club has a lot more room, which can accommodate larger live tournament fields. The club also offers free food, supplies the dealers, and is very player friendly. You also have the opportunity to play against accomplished professional poker players who have won many tournaments as well as World Series bracelets.
CFG: You just held your first deep-stack tournament on Saturday May 1 at 2 pm. What was the buy-in?
BG: The buy in was $20.00 with a $5.00 seat fee (which covers food and dealer costs).
CFG: How many players did you have for the tournament?
BG: We had 44 players enter the tournament, which I believe is the largest tournament the club has held to date.
CFG: What was the starting chip stacks and blind structure?
BG: The starting chip stack was $25K with 30-minute levels with a very generous blind structure.
CFG: How long did the tournament last before you had a winner?
BG: The tournament lasted about 6 hours before four players split 1st through fourth places. Based on the number of players and the anticipation that the tournament will only get bigger we are looking at possibly reducing the blinds to 20 minute levels and the starting chip stack to $20K to keep the length of the tournament a little shorter.
CFG: What was the payout structure?
BG: There were 5 places paid with the 1st place winner receiving $396.00 Fifth place received $44.00
CFG: I heard some exciting news that the winner had an opportunity to go heads up with 2-time WSOP bracelet-winner Minh Nguye for an extra $100 payout.
BG: At the start of the tournament, Minh Nguyen announced that whoever won the tournament would have the chance to play him heads up for an extra $100.00.
CFG: What was the result?
BG: Although I was not there to watch the heads up match, I do know that Minh won the match but lost a few pots to the challenger.
CFG: Will the Platinum Players Club continue to have a deep-stack tournament every Saturday?
BG: The club has asked me to continue to have the deep stack game every Saturday but they starting time will change to 1PM.
CFG: What about the heads up add on event?
BG: I do not know for sure if the heads up add on event will continue or not, but I do know that they have other special promotions planned.
CFG: What is the most memorable hand you played or saw being played?
BG: The most memorable hand of the tournament and one of the sickest hands I have ever seen happened. The tournament was down to three tables and the blinds were 500-1000 and the under the gun player, who is very loose, raised to 3000. It was folded around to the big blind, who was the tightest player at the table (quite possibly ever!) moved all in for 16K.
The under the gun player snap called and the big blind turned over pocket aces. This was no surprise to anyone at the table, except I guess for the UTG player. The loose player turned over pocket tens. The flop came 10-A-4 and the table went crazy. The table got even more rowdy when the dealer put the case 10 on the turn to crack the tight players set of Aces. It was by far one of the sickest hands I have ever seen.
CFG: Thanks Brian for taking the time to talk about your great tournament. I definitely plan to get down to the Platinum Players Club to get a first hand account of the action. If you want to take a look at the Platinum Players Club you may get to their site through this link:
